Cutie-Patootie & No Guilt::Go Quilt

As you probably already noticed, the cost of everything is on the rise.  As my supply of meats in our freezer has been depleting, my interest in spending time creating dinner from scratch each night also decreased.  I had been quite content coming up with new meal combos and utilizing our oven.  Even using the oven to slow-roast a whole chicken or other types of dishes like Loaded Chicken & Potatoes.  The low temp of the oven (around 250*) helped to offer warmth in the kitchen throughout the afternoon, offering a cozy and comfortable feel by the time the sun was set and dinner was ready.

With summer slowly arriving, I
decided (while piecing the mini orange quilt ~ Cutie-Patootie ~) that it was time to bring back my freezer meals for easy on the mind dinner prep.  I can pull the freezer meal out in the morning, allow it to thaw for several hours and then prepare it in our instant-pot... reducing the amount of heat generated in the kitchen by the slow-cooker allllll day.... But still have a meal that is easy to prepare and tastes delicious.

I mentioned last post that I needed to begin restocking the camper for a trip... the first thing I needed for that task was to make up the various seasoning blends I use.  It just so happens that I needed the Ranch Seasoning blend for the Paleo Mississippi Roast... I thought to myself, "Self, you should save time and do a double batch.  That way you have what you need for the recipe AND for the camper."

I replied... "You are so smart!"  But first I discovered that I didn't have any dried parsley on hand.  So, I needed to gather some parsley for the Ranch Seasoning blend.  I had the Mississippi roast in the slow-cooker, and I could use fresh parsley instead of the dried that the recipe called for.  I then proceeded to dry the remainder of the parsley from my herb garden and add what I needed to the jar when it was dried.

With the Ranch Seasoning and the Taco Seasoning done, I only needed to make the Seasoning Salt blend.  That only took a few minutes.

2 Tablespoons of:  Salt, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Paprika
1 Tablespoon:  Chili Powder, Parsley, Pepper and Red Pepper Flakes

I like to save repurpose glass seasoning jars for blends like this.  Making my own seasoning blends allows me to use my own herbs and choose the brand of others that I may need.  I can also eliminate those we may not like... or add extra of some of our favorites.

I can also ensure that there is no corn, gluten or soy-based ingredients in there.  It is ridiculous how they sneak them in!

While at the store where I purchased my roast, I found several packages of chicken breast on sale, I put together two Dijon Chicken meals and a Cool Ranch Shredded Chicken and got them in the freezer.  (You'll notice that the Dijon Chicken recipe is actually for the oven, but I use the crock.)

I'm ready now for several days of uninterrupted quilting/sewing/studio time finishing that little Cutie-Patootie! You know where to find me... ;)

OH, and be sure to join the Sew & Tell party.  You can find it here!

Have you ever made your own spice/seasoning blends?
What are your favorites?

Leave a comment... I'd love to hear from you!

Keep Piecing,

A Marathon Weekend and Quilt

As I stare at the beginning of this week, I have a tired, blank, empty stare...

After painting ALL day on Saturday, cleaning carpet on Sunday and getting furniture back in place I am exhausted!  What a week...  Let's take a look at what was on the "list" and what I accomplished.

✔ Block #5 of the Pieces in the Garden Sew Along was photographed... You'll be able to see what it is on May 26th. 😉
A bonus pattern and story have been written and the blocks photographed.  These will be released June 9th.

✔ I have 16 No Guilt::Go Quilt freezer meals prepped and waiting.  👏  I tried out a new one and I am happy to say that it is good enough to add into our regular rotation of freezer/crock meals.

Smothered Chicken

3 large chicken breast halves
1/4 cup pinot grigio wine (I used sunset blush, because it is what I had on hand)
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
2 cloves minced garlic

Place all of the above ingredients in a 1 gallon-sized freezer bag.

Needed on the day of cooking:
2 cups chicken broth
1/4 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons flour

Thaw freezer bag overnight in refrigerator.  Add contents of bag to crockpot.  Add the broth.  Stir the flour into the heavy cream until well mixed.  Pour over the chicken.  Cover and cook on low setting for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours.

Optional:  Remove the chicken from the crockpot into a large serving bowl.  In a small bowl, add 1 tablespoon flour or cornstarch and just enough water to mix and dissolve completely.  Pour into the pot.  Stir and cook until thickened.  Pour the sauce over the chicken and serve over rice or mashed potatoes.  Enjoy!

Note:  Brown rice flour (or another gf flour of your choice) can be used in place of regular flour.

✔ I had the t-shirt graphic blocks "harvested" and was ready to fuse as soon as the fusible interfacing arrived on Thursday.  By Friday evening I had the top ready for borders...

The recipient of this quilt is a runner.  He ran cross-country and track throughout high school and college and beyond.  There was even one "jersey" that had USA on it.  I think I need to find out the story of that one.

Did he try qualifying for the US Olympic team?

And that is where the weekend activities and marathon painting/cleaning took over... sending me into a state of exhausted staring.

This photo was taken just before we had a mishap with a paint spill. I won't say who was responsible for it... but I am glad that I didn't do it!  😧 We both acted quickly and got it cleaned up without tracking it all through the house as I raced to get the ladder outside and the shampooer out of the basement and filled with hot water to work out as much paint as we possibly could from the carpet.  We even had to remove a portion of the baseboard trim.  What a mess!  Paint was dripping off of the ladder once placed outside on the patio so that needed some attention as well.

In the meantime, there was a second pan of paint sitting on the floor in another area that could have easily become its own separate mess.  Once we had regrouped and finished clean-up we were able to laugh about it.

So maybe you understand my state of staring...  It's a little like needing a day of vacation to recover from your vacation. LOL!

❧ I need to return to the t-shirt quilt to get borders on it and then get it quilted.  And I think that will be all that is on my list this week.

What are your plans for the week?

Judy has been working on her Pieces in the Garden blocks...

And Kathy Reeves should be getting her prize package from the drawing for block #3 - Bachelor blocks soon.

Karen over at LilyPadLoveQuilt shared her Bachelor blocks and her Hours blocks.

I agree with her statement that the Bachelor block was not as fun or easy as the Hours block.  Despite the small 4-patch units in the Hours, it comes together really fast!

How is your garden row quilt coming along?  I'd love to see the progress...

Even Mrs. Bobbins is joining the fun!  😆

Keep Piecing!

Tuesday Check-in & No Guilt::GoQuilt

I am here with a Tuesday Check-in!  I have been knocking things off my list and feeling good about it...

✔  Final adjustments for the program content for on November 5th are being made.  One little hiccup... Dave and I were with our daughter and grand-daughters on Saturday.  They all tested positive for the virus on Sunday/Monday. We were sick a month ago... we are probably ok, but being responsible and in quarantine until we go for a test tomorrow.  Won't you join us in prayer that we are free and clear and test negative?

Plan B, should it be needed is to get the information to my Mom for her to present.  She is really nervous about the public speaking, though it is a subject matter she is very familiar with.  I am confident that she would do fine, but also confident that she won't need to step in.

I will be really, REALLY glad when this event is done.  It seems that every step of the way has been a challenge.  From getting the book published, to submitting the grants requests and getting everything ready for it...

I finished a selection of quilted cards that will be available at the event as well as the books.

✔
I still have a pattern that I need to finish writing for the next Santa Fe Trail Sew Along release.  Pattern has been tested and I think, *I think*, it has been properly linked so that you can retrieve the pattern with out an issue.  At least I will be on the Homefront to be able to correct any problems in a more timely manner.

❧  I didn't get to the pattern test for another quilter/designer/blogger.  But I still have time!

As for the use of the of my new appliances... I have tried a few recipes out and we will be keeping the air fryer.  We'll keep it simply because of the fact that the fries are good and healthier than deep frying them... and we eat A LOT of fries.  They are a on our menu several times a week.

I cooked some GF chicken tenders in it and Dave said that recipe was a keeper.  I just need to figure out the adjust in cooking time because it definitely took longer than 6 minutes for them to be done and lightly browned.

As for the quick/slow cooker... I am giving a recipe a try tonight...  All-in-one Chicken and Brown Rice.  I'll let you know what we think.  I'll be leaving out the mushrooms and trying green beans instead.  I'll be using a homemade Cream of Chicken soup in place of the canned stuff.  Here's that recipe as well...  I'll be swapping out the milk for a dairy free alternative and Einkorn flour instead of regular flour.

As for the coming week... I'll be testing that baby sized quilt and I received another top to quilt for a customer.  This one is cats...

AND she sent some extra "goodies" for me.  Yay!  Who doesn't love {fun} surprises???

Have you had any surprises lately?

Leave a comment... I love to hear from you.

Keep Quilting!

Checking the List and Checking Items Off

Another quilt DONE!  Again, the week went so smoothly, that I was able to out do my To-Do List.  The Papa Ray quilt has been mailed (not in the original plans, but sometimes life happens), the TOPS quilt has been labeled, washed and photographed, and as I type this, the Cowboy quilt has been washed and photo shoot done.  We walked up the lane in our little neighborhood to a semi-abandoned corral area.  A storm is moving in, so it was a little windy, but I have a few shots I am pleased with.

❧  This means that I will be returning to my brother's Brand Quilt.  I have a loose plan on how to quilt it... remember, he doesn't want it to be heavily quilted, so I will outline the brands and then do some stitch in the ditch around the squares and then maybe some sort of echo "frame" around the brands.  So, in all reality, despite the large size of 90 inches square, it shouldn't take too long.

One of the things that has helped me find so much time in the studio is the fact that I replenished my supply of No Guilt::Go Quilt crockpot freezer meals.  One new recipe I have added to our favorites is Dijon Chicken...  It is quick and easy to make, even without the use of a crockpot.  (I think the oven is set to 350 degrees)  It  is so easy to prep for the crockpot and it cooks up just fine.  Note:  You can chicken breasts or tenders as well.  And, I skip the rosemary, just because I don't have fresh on hand.  Serve over a bed of rice along with a side of your favorite vegetables... I like roasted asparagus and tomatoes seasoned with just a touch of salt, pepper and garlic and dinner is ready.  YUM!

What else will occupy my time for the week?

❧  Sashing strips, corner stones and borders for the Santa Fe Trail sew along quilt!  I am anxious to get it done and get some photos at a nearby wagon tracks location while the grass is still green and there is a chance of having some wild flowers in the area.

Block #3 of the sew along will be released on Thursday... Here's a sneak peek of the memoir shared.

"I remember so clearly the beauty of the earth, and how, as we bore westward, the deer and the antelope bounded away from us.  There were miles and miles of buffalo grass, blue lagoons and blood-red sunsets and, once in a while, a little sod house on the lonely prairie - home of some hunter or trapper.

Minute impressions flash before me; the sun-bonneted women, the woolen-trousered men, little mother in her flounced gingham, brother Will walking in long strides by our driver, voices of the lonely and homeless singing around blazing campfires."

I will continue on with the Shutterfly book of my Pieces From The Past sew along letters and stories. :)

Maybe I will have another Friday Finish this week!  But I suppose I should get going.  Time to do a quick swipe over the furniture with a rag and run the vacuum and so that I can get that Brand quilt sandwiched. Sometimes you just have to break the rules.  😜

Do you have a house cleaning routine or tips that saves time?  I'd love to hear your ideas and suggestions.

To-Do is Done Plus

Last week's list is complete and done!  I do love a productive week, though getting through it can sometimes be difficult with distractions all along the way.

✔Complete the quilting on the poppies table runner

This was FUN!  The matchstick quilting offers texture and I had fun using a variety of colors from my Aurifil thread collection.

Using more scraps from the improv poppies I made the binding and did big-stitches with orange embroidery floss to add to the modern look of the table runner.

Choose a quilt pattern for a giraffe quilt for the new grand-daughter that is due to arrive in early May.

This little guy will be the quilt for our little Hanna, but in pinks and greys. 💗🖤

Continue participating in the #31dayswithcottoncuts on instagram - Each day, post a picture related to the date's number. You can see all of my pictures by following the link above.

Here's a peek at what I have shared so far...

The "plus" item that I created was this little journal.  Using the same chapel picture that I used last week, I made this one with more of a "winter" setting.

I was giggling while digging in the piles of scraps that I sorted over the weekend.  But don't worry... they are still sorted and still in abundance!  You can see the whole story of why I sorted by following the link on the word "weekend" above.

Oh, BTW, do YOU need any scraps that would be perfect for string-piecing scrappy blocks?

I have lots!

Here's the deal... You can choose the color/s that you want - all you have to do is pay for shipping ($10 to cover the cost of priority mail postage and to print a label to US addresses - $35 for international).  If you are interested send me an email at MelvaLovesScraps@NolanQualityCustoms.com with your color choice/s and I will give you my paypal or venmo account info.  Once I receive payment I will stuff the priority mail envelope full, slap a label on it and send it off to you.

I have had requests for the yellow X'd piles but awaiting actual payment... first money gets the deal!

Our travel plans ran into a bit of an issue, so this is what I resorted to... sorting. **sigh** but I will stop my pouting and move forward because a friend so gently reminded me - "You don't know what God is protecting you from."  Okay, okay, okay...

So what sort of projects do I have in mind for the coming week?  Hmmmm... nothing too exciting.

❧  Some necessary research for the wrap up of the Pieces From The Past Sew Along Series and the beginning of the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail.  The fabric I selected for the blocks will be arriving this week. YAY! Because Marion Sloan Russell made her first journey on the trail in 1852, I selected some Civil War reproduction fabrics.

❧  Perhaps another Chapel postcard or journal?

❧  Purchase fabric for Hanna's giraffe quilt

We have snow predicted for over night and for most of tomorrow (Tuesday).  I love to watch the snow fall outside the window in my studio.  I MUST do something in there while I have the crockpot going with one of my No Guilt::Go Quilt recipes.  Enjoy!

Before you go though... Leave a comment telling me ~

Where is your favorite place to watch snow coming down outside?

Have a great week!

Stay Piece-ful,

Melva

Naughty or Nice?

I stumbled upon a list of Naughty or Nice for Quilters that made me laugh and I just had to share with you.

Naughty...

✦  You added more items to your UFO list than you completed

✦  You measured once and had to cut twice

✦  You bought too much and had to sneak packages inside

✦  You got busy sewing and forgot to make dinner

✦  You photocopied the pattern and cheated the designer out of her due

✦  You turned into the "Quilt Police"

✦  You bought the book/pattern you already owned because you have so many you forgot you already have it

✦  You spoke like a sailor when you realized you were sewing with no bobbin thread

Nice...

✦  You finished your project!

✦  You gave a quilted item as a gift

✦  You can always find something nice to say about other people's quilts

✦  You rejoice in your friends' quilting successes

✦  You donate your time and talent to sew for worthy causes

✦  You shared your best scraps

✦  You shared tiny pieces for crazy friends or pet beds

✦  You taught your skill to a new quilter

✦  You did a sewing chore for someone who doesn't sew

If you need a little help with item 4 on the naughty list - forgot to make dinner a time or two I can help you out.

Here's a new No Guilt::Go Quilt slow cooker recipe that I found for Cashew Chicken...

Crock Pot Cashew Chicken

Ingredients:
2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thigh tenders or chicken breast tenders

1 tsp black pepper
1 Tbsp canola oil
1/2 cup coconut aminos (or soy sauce)
4 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
4 Tbsp ketchup
2 Tbsp honey
2 garlic cloves, minced

1 tsp grated fresh ginger
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

1/2 cup cashews

Directions:

Place diced chicken in a slow cooker. Combine soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, sugar, garlic, ginger, and pepper flakes in small bowl; pour over chicken. Cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours.

Combine 1/4 cup water and 4 teaspoons Tapioca starch (or corn starch) and stir into the sauce to thicken. Serve over rice with some stir-fry veggies.  Garnish with cashews.

Makes 4-6 servings.

So how do you measure up?

Are you a "Naughty" quilter?

Or a "Nice" quilter?

In all honesty, I confess to a few of items on the "naughty" list, but I can check off more items on the "nice" list.  How 'bout you?

Leave a comment... I'd love to hear from you!

Merry Christmas,

Melva

Ta-Dah! Tuesday

I set forth my list of To Do's and they all became Ta-Dah's!  I love a productive week...

I'll be wrapping up the table topper with our business logo

I love the way it looks! And the win-win is that when Dave wants to do photos of the the guns he builds or restores there is no need for watermarking the photos.

He did tell me that it is too nice to be left on the table between shoots so it will be protected from grease and oil stains.

Just look at all that texture!  Though it seemed to take forever to do the acres of stippling, it was worth it.

And the 80% cotton batting, after washing and drying it, adds to it!

Releasing the next Pieces From The Past block - #15 - The Maple Leaf Block - a super simple pattern that is a very traditional and a family recipe for pinto beans that ties into the letter from former Prisoner of War, Erich Vogel.

This is a hotpad that I made using the pattern...  I love the effect of the printed background and "disappearing" leaf.

Starting a baby quilt for a special young lady we have known for about 20 years.

Not only did I start it, I finished it.  The center panel featuring Tigger says "Let's Go Explore".  The quilt is a small one... perfect for a newborn baby and tummy time.

❧I'll be sewing on a label before sending it off... one of the projects I'll be taking with me as we run off for one final camping trip for the year.

We'll be headed to a canyon that has dinosaur tracks in it - The Picketwire Trail.

❧I'll take along a few more postcard blocks to stitch, but honestly, I don't know how much time I will have for that since the trail to the bottom of the canyon is 5 miles one way.  I may be too tired when we get back to camp.

No other great plans other than trying out a new No Guilt::Go Quilt recipe for Creamy Chicken tortilla Soup.  I'll be making a few adjustments to it so that is falls within my dietary restrictions, but that won't be hard.  Omit the corn and stir in dairy free cream cheese rather than sour cream.

With the holiday season looming just around the corner I decided to pull some pretty fabric out of storage and make some wraps to sell.  A tutorial to make them is available on Marie Bostwick's blog.

As Marie said... "I saw a pretty ruana in a local boutique with a $129 price tag, then I had an epiphany…

Hey! I can make these myself!"

And make them I did... I had enough fabric for six... and I have sold five already (at a much more affordable price).  As my sister-in-law stated... this is perfect symphony attire - if they ever start up again.

And two of my friends purchased some as Christmas gifts for family members.

Thank you to everyone who supports a small business!

Are you making Christmas gifts?
What are you making???  I'd love to hear your ideas.

Stay calm and keep quilting,

Melva

OCC Sewing & 500th Post Celebration/Give Away

As I had planned last week I have been a busy little elf in the studio creating some special WOW gifts for our church's Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes.

✔  I will be making items for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes...  I have fabric pulled to make shorts for little boys and skirts for the girls.

As it turned out, I have had extra time... let me explain.

On Thursday we received a message stating that our son-in-law had reported for his mandatory bi-weekly covid test on Monday.  The results revealed a positive.  Ummm... we had just delivered the kiddos home on Sunday night, so in reality, there was a very real chance that one of the grands could test positive as well.  For the sake of others, we have been self-isolating until all test results are in.

Am I concerned for my health?  Not really.  Our daughter (the Momma of those sweet children) was sick 12 months ago.  Really, really sick with a bronchial infection and flu like symptoms that antibiotics and steroid treatments did nothing to help.

It became our suspicion in March and April that she had the virus pre-pandemic.  Our suspicions were proven to be true when she donated blood in May after they started testing for the CV-19 antibodies to make convalescent plasma to use as treatment for covid positive patients... her donation was positive.  Meaning... the kids, who had also been slightly ill at the same time as her, have also already been exposed.

**UPDATE** All tests for the grands and their Momma were negative.  Our son-in-law still has no symptoms.  We all good!

None the less, out of respect for those that fear a possible exposure we have been home since receiving the news.

As of Monday morning, I have 6 pairs of shorts for boys and 16 skirts for girls of various sizes and colors.  I grew bored with skirts and moved on to making 12 hair scrunchies - using the last of the small elastic that I had in my stash.

Up next are infinity scarves and light/sheer/frilly scarves for little girls.

What else have I done?

✔  Something else... not sure what, but surely there will be something that captures my attention!

I had made a large shopping trip prior to the news of our son-in-law's test results with plans to prep crockpot freezer meals.  I have 16 meals ready for the making allowing ample opportunities for some No Guilt::Go Quilt days in my future!

I haven't had any new recipes for some time.  I have not tried this Chicken Curry recipe, mostly because I don't care for curry, but the reviews on it were good, and there may be readers out there that have different tastes that myself.

✔  I filled an order for three therapeutic rice bags for a customer...  Each bag has a flannel cover that is machine washable for sanitary purposes. :)

✔  I did some deep cleaning... woohoo (spoken in an unenthusiastic tone with an eye roll)

And now... for the celebration and give away!  A few weeks ago I was doing some updating of the blog (did you notice I created a tab at the top for the Pieces From The Past Sew Along?) and I saw that I was approaching 500 posts.  I reflected back to when I started the blog in 2013 and how my quilting skills have improved, and how the writing and content of my posts have morphed into story telling. No need to go looking... I'm actually a bit embarrassed... but it is our past that shapes and makes us who we are today.

In clearing out some old pattern books I came across this little gem featuring some fun, folk-art type patterns featuring wool, flannel and plaids.  If there is one thing I have learned through the Pieces From The Past Sew Along, it is that the choice of fabric style and colors bring new life to something vintage making it modern and new!

I personally lean toward this kind of primitive/traditional but I have learned from many of you that bright and bold can be just as fun.

I can already envision that sampler wall hanging with bright colors indicative of the Northern Lights with big stitch quilting.

So, for a chance to win this pattern book, leave a comment by November 8th 11:59 p.m. (MST) on how you found my blog and how you follow me...
There are a variety of ways!  Via e-mail (you can sign up in the right hand margin), bloglovin', facebook and instagram.

Be sure to leave an email address if you are an anonymous or no-reply commenter so that I can contact you.  fyi, I do not have a mailing list nor will I sell your contact info to anyone.  Your privacy is respected here...

My apologies, but the winner must have a US mailing address.

Piece Happy!
