It's A "Wild" Life - Finish

It is with great excitement and a little sprinkle of sadness to say that my It's A "Wild" Life block of the month quilt is complete.

When I started it last year I was unsure and uncomfortable of the whole fusible applique process but as the months passed by with a little more applique included with each block my confidence grew.

I enjoyed all of the blocks and the memories and stories that I recalled as I worked on the blocks...

From our "close encounters" with bear, to watching deer graze in our yard, and enjoying some mountain picnics... fishing as a child, our house with a view of the mountain range... enjoying a morning watching some fox at a state park, remembering how far we have come in our camping accommodations... stories of skunks and raccoons.  They included a few very hearty laughs, but all very good memories.

I had fun creating the detail and movement in each block... every pine tree received stitching kinda like a Christmas tree...

I added detail of a carving that Dave left behind on an aspen tree a few years ago, as shown in the photo below...

His carving actually shows '63 (his year of birth) but I put '83... the year he left the carving as well as the year we met. 💕

I created detail for the parking pad of the truck and trailer...

(it is a little hard to see...) >>>

... and grass was placed in all of the blocks that had grassy areas.

Again, it is a little hard to see, but there are leaves offering detail in the large trees in the Moose go camping block...

and loops and swirls in all of the sky areas of the quilt.

And now these memories get to travel with us this year as we begin thinking of camping!

We are getting antsy! We are at the time of year that the temps can easily be 60 to 70 degrees during the day, but as soon as the sun goes down, they drop drastically... and there is a chance for a snow storm or blizzard every few days.

Mother Nature is teasing us!  Spring is around the corner, but she can quickly remind us... NOT YET!  Like the day the sun was shining... and it was snowing and blowing and the highway shut down!

A few places on our wish list of places to travel to include Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo, TX, The Great Sand Dunes and some remote places in the San Isabel National Forest.

I am certain we will find many more great locations that are just a few hours from us and we can enjoy a few days of fun hiking or biking and unplugging and getting back in touch with nature.

Where do you like to go to "get away"?

Leave a comment... I love to hear from my readers.

Quilt Happy!

  2. Melva, Your quilt is fabulous. I love all the detail you put into it, too. I appreciate how you always ask a question to get the conversation going. I don't have a favorite getaway place any more. If I'm able, I like to go to Albuquerque to see my daughter and her two sons. When I go her husband is noticeably absent as much as possible which is a blessing. When he is home, he likes to belittle me and I just take it to try to keep the peace. Of course, at some point I end up crying. He does it in front of the rest of the family. It really hurts the older son who understands what is happening and the younger one is just confused. In April, I'll be taking a two hour jaunt to Arkansas to take care of my grandkids and one of my two new granddaughters so my son and his fiancee can go get married. That will be fun. Three of the four kids live with them and they all ride the bus at staggered times. If possible one of my friends will be going with me. She's like an aunt to them. My son is 41 and it's his first go at a marriage. I'd love to make them a quilt. However, they have a California king bed and I don't think my arms can take that weight to put it all together. I'd have to send it out to be quilted for sure. I just don't think I can do it but I'd love to try but hate to get it just partially finished. Thanks for sharing your marvelous quilt. Great finish!

  5. Beautifully finished. It's great that each block has a special meaning to you. We don't have a favourite place to get away but we enjoy car trips that last 3-4 days. I just can't stay away from the kitties and home longer than that.

  6. What a great quilt. I loved reading your story about it, and think how it holds all of the memories. Very well done. I hope it gets to be shown in a quilt show. I have a pretty calm and nice life at age 62, retired, and a huge sewing loft. We live in a cabin my spouse built in the mountains. To get away, I go to my garden or to the Salmon River. Nothing is as calming and wonderful.

  9. It turned out just too cute. Thank you so much for joining us for 2018. Love all the personal details that you added to your quilt. The initials carved into the tree with quilting makes it so special. My hubby carved ours into the fence post out in our backyard. Glad to see that you are on board for 2019.
