I felt like I was a vinyl record with a scratch that the needle can't move past... still quilting Lala... still quilting Lala... Still quilting Lala...
And then on Friday I was F I N A L L Y able to say the quilting was done!
I knew that the amount of fabric I had remaining for the binding was going to be close. I had a few strips of 2-1/2 leftover from the patchwork blocks but not enough fabric for all of the binding. I was able to work a little magic to make it all work out.
Before I get into that magic let's take a look at this week's randomly selected Sew & Tell feature.
Viridian shared her R/W/B version of Limeade. It is so close to being the size for a Quilt of Valor! She finished the top and with a border it would be perfect. Be sure to visit Viridian's blog if you are interested in the source of the pattern.
While thinking of QOV... I have the fall quilt retreat coming up and have plans to use the patriotic - R/W/B fabrics I picked up while thrifting in Illinois last month. I need to pull a few more pieces and start cutting strips to curate my own jellyrolls from stash in preparation for it.
Back to the magic of stretching the limited amount of fabric for binding into enough for Lala's Scrappy Irish Chain Quilt. Using my two color (false flange) binding trick.
I recently tried a two color binding and was very pleased with the finished look... It allows for the quick Back to Front AND a pop of color... Here's the step by step to help you out.
Once you determine which two colors you are using for your binding and you decide which color is the "binding" and which is the "flange"... cut the binding color strip 1-1/2" wide (the white) and cut the flange color strip to 1-3/4" (the blue). Sew strips together... press the seam to the 1-1/2" side of the binding unit.
Press in half...
Sew binding to the back of the quilt with the narrow piece up (so that when you flip to the front the white is hidden in the binding.)

| Ta-dah! Magic! |
Now... If anyone has a magic trip to managing all the tails of thread... Let me know! That's where I will be found... under Lala's quilt burying and trimming all of the starts and stop that I made during the quilting. ;)
The final step will be to have a photo shoot. I've got some fun ideas for this one... stay tuned.
Keep Piecing,
Melva

That two color binding can work like magic when you are short on fabric for a binding! I'm glad you have a finished quilt. I anticipate your next post which will contain lovely photos of your finish! I look forward to finishing mine when I can sit at the machine without too much protesting from my hip and knee!
ReplyDeleteHooray for that quilting finish! Good idea to do the flanged binding, too, to stretch that main binding fabric. Can wait to see your finished photos!
ReplyDeleteTwo color bindings are great when you are short of fabric. I need to remember that as I'm going to be close on having enough to bind Celtic Solstice when it's finished. I've been burying my threads as I go when I'm quilting, so I don't have to do them all at the end. Enjoy your stitching time this week.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a creative way to stretch the binding fabric! I thought at first you were making a flange binding so it took me a minute to catch up with what you did. Pretty tricky!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of a two color binding but what a great idea!!
