Welcome to the Peek-A-Who blog hop, hosted by Marian at Seams To Be Sew! Details of the give away will be at the end of the post... along with a list of all the participants in the hop this week.
Fall is in the air as the temps drop, the leaves change color and scatter across the yard, and pumpkin spice takes over everything!
The name of the hop inspired the wall hanging I am featuring... As well as this picture! Part of the fun of Halloween is trying to figure out who is "behind the mask" (ok, so masks are frowned upon now days, but I think you get the idea.)
This Halloween photo is of my husband's family... circa mid to late 1960s. Who IS behind the various masks??? Left to right - Dave, Pat, Michael, Linda, Sharon and Marcie.
It is actually pretty funny to look at some of the other Halloween photos and realize that the same masks and costumes are there, but on different kiddos!

No more waiting... Here is my project.
My wall hanging was sketched out on a piece of paper while in the car...
Not all of my ideas were used... because of practicality (how do you really make a spider face recognizable?) as well size restriction. I used six inch blocks and raw edge applique to make the face parts... for a quick and fun project. It finished at 21" x 24". If you wanted to use 12" blocks and a few extra faces it could make a fun throw.
Though I love each block and the personality that shows through the placement of the eyes and nose, the mummy was a favorite to make. I used bias tape as the wrappings...
Frankenstein has a comical look on his face, while the cat looks concerned... and the witch, well, she had a bad hair cut. Ooops!
Fall and Halloween have always been a fun season to decorate for. Years ago there was a small tree in our front yard that would get decorations for various seasons... in the spring it would have plastic eggs dangling from the branches and in October it would hold ghosts and pumpkins. I must admit that I do less seasonal decor changes since our girls are grown and on their own.
In 2000 the youth of our church held a fundraiser. Members could pay to have a "pumpkin patch" delivered to someone's front yard. The pumpkin patch consisted of about 20 newspaper filled pumpkin bags. The only way they would be removed was if that person paid $20 and selected another church family to receive them.
It was all supposed to be done on the sly and be a surprise... but trying to keep a group of pre-teen and teenagers quiet as they unloaded the pumpkins from multiple vans was a little tricky! Let's play the quiet game... yeah, right!
Over the years we have had definitely had some fun with costumes... Check these out!
I love the boots on the wrong feet! haha, yes, that is me...
Halloween 1992 - Dave with our girls...
and our family - a volley ball player, a couple football players and a yellow M&M in about 2004 (I spy a quilted hanky wall hanging in the background that I made for my Grandma T with all of her hankies!)
Our friends held a costume party in 2000... we borrowed the cave people costumes from some friends. There was a lot of laughter and crazy antics that happened at that party.
Don't we look great???
Below was a fundraiser at the local art museum... we were in "Pair-a-dice"... I know a little cheesy, but it was fun too!
Time for give away details! I will be having a random drawing for a beginner friendly and fat quarter friendly row quilt.
Rules are simple... leave a comment before October 28th.
Tell me which character of the quilt is your favorite... or let me know which costumes are prize winning!

So tempting to pick the mummy as the favorite, but I just have to go with the black cat! That is a wonderful design! All the photos of family Halloweens took me back to when it really was fun. Trunk or Treat just isn't quite the same. =) Thanks for sharing your photos and stories, and I think the cave people would win my vote for best dressed. LOL Thanks for your special giveaway chance, too.
ReplyDeleteI love the costume pictures! I remember those plastic masks - the ones you really couldn't see out of the holes...LOL.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that you could never really see out of the masks, making it dangerous for kids crossing the street... But still fun!
DeleteMy favorite is the cat.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute fun wall hanging....Love It !!!
ReplyDeleteI especially like the Mummy face and the bias tape was a great idea! I had to giggle at your last 2 costume photos because I have very similar photos! My husband and I did dice costumes years ago and in college my roommate and I did jungle outfits.
ReplyDeleteI love your masks project, Melva. Thank you for sharing all the pics with us.
ReplyDeleteRonelle
Thank you Ronelle for helping to make this hop a fun and successful event. :) Blessings, M
DeleteI love your quilt! All the characters are great but my favorite is the pumpkin. I've always been a sucker for pumpkins.
ReplyDeleteVery cute wall hanging! I think my favorite character is the cat in the lower right corner! And for costumes - Pebbles and Bam Bam win hands down! LOL Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever quilt! And all your Halloween memories and traditions look like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat quilt--very creative. I am partial to the kitty cat--like all those whiskers, I guess. That mummy is cool too, probably my 2nd choice. You sure get into costumes--those cave people are neat--reminds me of Fred and Wilma but your husband had more hair than Fred. Ha! Fun times! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteCute idea-I too like the mummy one the best.
ReplyDeleteHi Melva! Ohhhh, I love all the photos you shared with us today. You wearing boots on the wrong feet just cracked me up, as well as the look on your father's face. I wonder if you just said something? So darn cute. I adore the Flintstone costumes. Your quilt is so cute as well! I love the mummy - hands down my favorite but they are all really nice. I design in a very similar fashion only I usually use post-it notes. They are usually too small but I get my ideas down in some fashion. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeletesuper cute! what a great post!
ReplyDeleteThank you Karla :)
DeleteThe cat is my favorite, but I like how you made the mummy too!
ReplyDeleteVery cute quilt. I am kind of partial to the mummy too! Love the pics of you and your family from Halloween past.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the cat! You did a great job on your quilt.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Frankenstein's hair blends in with Dracula's block. So it makes Dracula look like he has a beard. Awesome! You've done a great job with your blocks!
ReplyDeleteI did notice that Frankenstein should have been located in a different area AFTER it was complete. That is what I get for being in a rush to meet a deadline!
DeleteMy children's favorite holiday was Halloween! I love your mummy- that was brilliant to use the bias tape for his bindings.
ReplyDeleteI love the Mummy, its a great scary movie too. Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt! I think Frankie is my favorite. Truly enjoyed seeing all your Halloween pictures from the past. Great memories. Thank you so much for sharing.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun quilt. You have captured the Peek a Who moments with a flair! Loved looking thru your old photos too. It really is fun to go back and share a laugh or two along the way. As for my favorite...It's gotta be Dracula. There is just something about those pearly whites! :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is a really fun quilt. I love the Pair a Dice costume
ReplyDeleteThe black cat in the corner. What a great design for the season!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Melody :)
DeleteI do love the Cat!! thank you!
ReplyDeleteThat is a fabulous quilt. Such a simple idea yet so effective and challenging to make sure the characters are recognizable. I am having a tough time picking a favourite face so will pick a favourite row - the bottom one with Franky, the Cyclops and the kitty. Thank you for sharing such a fun quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun quilt idea! Love the texture in the mummy. Looks like a lot of great times for Halloween.
ReplyDeleteThanks! While we don't dress for Halloween every year, when we do dress up, we have fun.
DeleteI love your quilt especially the mummy block. Oh and all of your costumes are wonderful. Those dice are great and the cave men are so fun. We love to dress up also. And because there were five kids growing up we did the same with sharing costumes. And our two did the same. There were always little tweaks when sharing but that was cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing today. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net

ReplyDeleteI like the mummy block best. Cute quilt.
ReplyDeleteI like the jack o lantern block the best.

ReplyDeleteThank you Sue. :)
DeleteYou are sew creative!!! I love your Halloween faces wall hanging. My favorite is the mummy. But I've changed that answer twice already so I guess I like many of them. And I love the costume of you and Dave as the Fred and Wilma. I bet you sewed them, too.
ReplyDeleteI love the mummy face in your quilt with one eye only partially visible. You have also had some good costumes. I guess the pair of dice is my favorite. Nancy A: rangerer@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteMelva, I love your quilt. I am having a hard time choosing between the Cat, the mummy, and the owl. If I have to pick one I guess it would be the cat. I have a black cat and I love her so much. Thank you for your wonderful quilt.

ReplyDeleteYour wall hanging is fantastic! I don't think I could pick a favorite. Wonderful work! Love the Halloween photos with costumes from the past. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHalloween never was one of my favorite events. I remember a neighbor trying to look under our costumes to try to figure out who we kids were. I thought that was the whole idea that folks didn't know who you were and even as a small child I thought it was wrong that these people I only knew to be a neighbor (we lived in the country) to be trying to look under my costume. I guess I got a bad feeling about those folks very early. Never did know much about them and the little I did always had my at alert. Anyhow, these are fun pictures and sure reflect what I feel were good times. I love the fun raiser idea. I can imagine trying to keep some young people quiet. I remember one of the "cheerleading moms" telling me about some twin girls who were the daughters in our neighborhood were the daughters of our very good friends. They were the only non-cheer girls at my daughter's birthday party one year. Anyhow, one day the neighborhood mom heard a racket out in her yard one day - she already had 5 kids of her own and taught school so she was used to noise. She opened the door and there in the middle of the day were the twins, dressed in black trying to TP their tree. She opened the door and explained to the girls that if you were going to do that - 1) You don't draw attention to yourself by wearing all black in the middle of the day; 2) you TP at night when you won't be seen AND 3) above all else you are quiet when you do such a thing. She suggested that the girls get their back sides down the block to their cul-de-sac where they belonged instead of the entry into the addition where everyone would see them trying to destruction little girls. LOL The twins were born 6 weeks after my daughter, our second child. We didn't do much with that couple after that. Having four children under 2 1/2 was just too much to try to do anything. I loved the older costumes with masks and I loved homemade costumes. One year I made matching bunny costumes for my children for Halloween. Our son was small for his age and our daughter was pretty small two and often they were mistaken for twins, so they looked like two little bunnies. I made them out of terry towel material. Another year, I made a Strawberry Shortcake dress and even a wig. The things I used to do and I had fun. I adore your talent and your Halloween quilt. Great job. I hope I'm about ready to get back to my quilting history form - it's the picture that's the hangup. I don't know where I put the quilt that I need for the picture. Praise God my kids' dad is healing. He's is rehab and standing on his "good" leg for 6 minutes at a time and still no weight on his broken pelvis side.
ReplyDeleteI love all the monsters! lol And fave costume is the Pair-a-Dice!! Very clever! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun little quilt and post. I liked many of the faces. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI love the cat character on the quilt, and I also love the dice costumes! Both are winners. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteRaw applique would probably be best for the spider legs. Then they would look fuzzy
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion Emily :)
DeleteLove the pics of all the costumes. The texture on the mummy block is awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I love the photos too. And I think that I see a mummy in my future. Thanks for sharing.

I love your quilt. Thanks for sharing. I love your cave people costumes.

ReplyDeleteYou should call your wall hanging "Halloween Eyes"
ReplyDeleteThat is a great name. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
DeleteI like your cavemen costumes. Your quilt is cute. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt and the pictures. Jmikebalou(at) aol (dot) com
ReplyDeleteI loved the bags of newspaper idea! You used to be able to buy those bags in a party store, but I haven't seen them for a while.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, I haven't seen them for some time... they probably became obsolete because of recycling or because people would weigh them down to prevent them from blowing away. :-/
DeleteI just LOVE the concept of your wall hanging. It is just so creative. I love Halloween. It truly is my favorite holiday.
ReplyDeleteThat turned out so cute and looks like it would be fun to make. My favorite would still be the pumpkin. I love the idea of the pumpkin bags, but I can imagine teenagers joy (and noise) of doing the deed.
ReplyDeleteThe bias tape was completely inspired! And I remember clearly the days of waiting for my girls outside band rehearsal, drawing on napkins and notepads with quilt ideas. :) fun memory, thanks
ReplyDeleteLove your old photos!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I was a pleasant trip down memory lane. :)
DeleteI love the cat character on the quilt! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love this post, the mask quilt... or Halloween Eyes as a another comment mentioned.. I love that you shared past years of your Halloweens and the fun costumes. Those dice are too cool tho but I also loved the Cavemen costumes. Thanks so much for participating today and my sincerest apologies for not getting around to the blogs sooner this week. It's really been I think my busiest week of the year thus far.
ReplyDeleteCute quilt! Loved seeing your family photos, fun!
