Hanna's First Year Finish

I snuck in the finish of Hanna's First Year quilt just in the nick of time to get it on social media and linked for August's One Month Goal...

And then we turned the calendar to September, and I have been preoccupied with lots of other things.  Including the celebration of (INTER)National Sewing Month.  To kick of the celebration Brenda at Songbird Designs and I co-hosted a blog hop featuring 20 bloggers that shared a variety of projects that fell into the theme of "Get on Board with Sewing".  We went international with several bloggers that live outside of the United States. :)

Stories of getting started with sewing were shared and prize drawings were entered...

Are you sad that you missed out on some of the fun?  No worries!  You can still visit all of the blogs this weekend and get entered into the drawing for the grand prize package.  You can get details by visiting the following links.

Don't forget to enter the Rafflecopter (provided on the blogs) for the mega prize package! These are the prizes included:

$25 gift certificate from Rebecca Page,
$25 gift certificate from Gardensong Fabrics,
Fabulously Fast Quilts book by Amy Smart, donated by Patrcia at Faith, Trust & Breast Cancer
Crib size Quilter’s Dream Dream Angel batt donated by Brenda at Songbird Designs
Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail digital pattern and a spool of Aurifil thread donated by 🙋
Three stash builder bundles donated by Island Batik

But the celebration of (INTER)National Sewing Month will continue all month with a photo challenge on Instagram and facebook.  It is a simple daily posting or sharing of various sewing notions related to that day's number.  We will have prize drawings on September 10th, 17th, 24th and 30th.

Now that the shameless plug for the event is done... back to Hanna's First Year quilt.

It was delivered on Monday!  Hanna seemed to have like it... and her Momma was pleased too.  Heather noticed that the binding was from one of the baby blankets and Emma, just 8 years old, commented that she liked how I put all of the smallest blocks together in the middle.  (I think the girl may have an eye for design 😍)

Here are a few more pictures of details...

The personalized blanket that was used as the
background of Hanna's monthly pictures was
included as part of the backing

A hand-stitched buttonhole stich completed the binding on the back

A few bows from various outfits were added as embellishments

A second personalized blanket was used as setting squares and binding

Two of her newborn hats were included as applique

I had planned on doing free-motion quilting with hearts and loops but soon discovered after doing a section that stitches were being skipped because of the thickness of the quilt sandwich.  Since the blanket on the back also had fusible interfacing, it was even thicker than my normal memory quilts.  So, I picked out the stitches and went with my traditional straight line, square grid on point quilting... with no issue at all.

I have encountered this problem on other t-shirt quilts too.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to fix it?

Leave a comment... I'd love to hear from you!

Keep Piecing,

Melva

  1. What a darling quilt! Hanna looks so cute standing on it. Sounds like you might have a protégé in Emma. Love the way you incorporated the hats and personalized blankets and the bows. And I LOVE that blanket stitch! I wish I could help you with your issue, but I'm clueless.
Thank you for sharing with us at To Do Tuesday, and thanks for all your hard work on the Get On Board hop!

  3. Hannah's quilt is just lovely. I love that her personalized blankets were used in the quilt. Very impressed with Emma's comments! Only two thoughts on your problem with quilting....slow down the machine or a different needle (larger or ballpoint). The pointy hearts are a problem because of the start/stop/switch direction. Let us know if you find a solution.

  4. Such a beautiful quilt!
So my biggest solution to that was to make sure its a new needle and slow down when stitching - to make sure it has time to makes its full stitch ... good luck

  7. Hi Melva, what a wonderful quilt - it always holds so many memories! Doing FMQ on a very thick quilt is always more difficult isn't it, especially on the curves. Thanks for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks.
