Fall is in the air as the temps drop, the leaves change color and scatter across the yard, and pumpkin spice takes over everything!
The name of the hop inspired the wall hanging I am featuring... As well as this picture! Part of the fun of Halloween is trying to figure out who is "behind the mask" (ok, so masks are frowned upon now days, but I think you get the idea.) This Halloween photo is of my husband's family... circa mid to late 1960s. Who IS behind the various masks??? Left to right - Dave, Pat, Michael, Linda, Sharon and Marcie.
It is actually pretty funny to look at some of the other Halloween photos and realize that the same masks and costumes are there, but on different kiddos!
No more waiting... Here is my project.
My wall hanging was sketched out on a piece of paper while in the car...
Not all of my ideas were used... because of practicality (how do you really make a spider face recognizable?) as well size restriction. I used six inch blocks and raw edge applique to make the face parts... for a quick and fun project. It finished at 21" x 24". If you wanted to use 12" blocks and a few extra faces it could make a fun throw.
Though I love each block and the personality that shows through the placement of the eyes and nose, the mummy was a favorite to make. I used bias tape as the wrappings...
Frankenstein has a comical look on his face, while the cat looks concerned... and the witch, well, she had a bad hair cut. Ooops!
Fall and Halloween have always been a fun season to decorate for. Years ago there was a small tree in our front yard that would get decorations for various seasons... in the spring it would have plastic eggs dangling from the branches and in October it would hold ghosts and pumpkins. I must admit that I do less seasonal decor changes since our girls are grown and on their own.
In 2000 the youth of our church held a fundraiser. Members could pay to have a "pumpkin patch" delivered to someone's front yard. The pumpkin patch consisted of about 20 newspaper filled pumpkin bags. The only way they would be removed was if that person paid $20 and selected another church family to receive them.
It was all supposed to be done on the sly and be a surprise... but trying to keep a group of pre-teen and teenagers quiet as they unloaded the pumpkins from multiple vans was a little tricky! Let's play the quiet game... yeah, right!
Over the years we have had definitely had some fun with costumes... Check these out!

and our family - a volley ball player, a couple football players and a yellow M&M in about 2004 (I spy a quilted hanky wall hanging in the background that I made for my Grandma T with all of her hankies!)
Our friends held a costume party in 2000... we borrowed the cave people costumes from some friends. There was a lot of laughter and crazy antics that happened at that party.

Below was a fundraiser at the local art museum... we were in "Pair-a-dice"... I know a little cheesy, but it was fun too!

So tempting to pick the mummy as the favorite, but I just have to go with the black cat! That is a wonderful design! All the photos of family Halloweens took me back to when it really was fun. Trunk or Treat just isn't quite the same. =) Thanks for sharing your photos and stories, and I think the cave people would win my vote for best dressed. LOL Thanks for your special giveaway chance, too.

ReplyDeleteI especially like the Mummy face and the bias tape was a great idea! I had to giggle at your last 2 costume photos because I have very similar photos! My husband and I did dice costumes years ago and in college my roommate and I did jungle outfits.

ReplyDeleteHi Melva! Ohhhh, I love all the photos you shared with us today. You wearing boots on the wrong feet just cracked me up, as well as the look on your father's face. I wonder if you just said something? So darn cute. I adore the Flintstone costumes. Your quilt is so cute as well! I love the mummy - hands down my favorite but they are all really nice. I design in a very similar fashion only I usually use post-it notes. They are usually too small but I get my ideas down in some fashion. ~smile~ Roseanne

DeleteI love your quilt especially the mummy block. Oh and all of your costumes are wonderful. Those dice are great and the cave men are so fun. We love to dress up also. And because there were five kids growing up we did the same with sharing costumes. And our two did the same. There were always little tweaks when sharing but that was cool.

Hard to choose a favorite .. like choosing a favorite child! I liking the mummy, though. Probably because my daughter made a 30" plus mummy which is sitting in our living room holding a dead bouquet of flowers! They kind of match!!

ReplyDeleteHalloween never was one of my favorite events. I remember a neighbor trying to look under our costumes to try to figure out who we kids were. I thought that was the whole idea that folks didn't know who you were and even as a small child I thought it was wrong that these people I only knew to be a neighbor (we lived in the country) to be trying to look under my costume. I guess I got a bad feeling about those folks very early. Never did know much about them and the little I did always had my at alert. Anyhow, these are fun pictures and sure reflect what I feel were good times. I love the fun raiser idea. I can imagine trying to keep some young people quiet. I remember one of the "cheerleading moms" telling me about some twin girls who were the daughters in our neighborhood were the daughters of our very good friends. They were the only non-cheer girls at my daughter's birthday party one year. Anyhow, one day the neighborhood mom heard a racket out in her yard one day - she already had 5 kids of her own and taught school so she was used to noise. She opened the door and there in the middle of the day were the twins, dressed in black trying to TP their tree. She opened the door and explained to the girls that if you were going to do that - 1) You don't draw attention to yourself by wearing all black in the middle of the day; 2) you TP at night when you won't be seen AND 3) above all else you are quiet when you do such a thing. She suggested that the girls get their back sides down the block to their cul-de-sac where they belonged instead of the entry into the addition where everyone would see them trying to destruction little girls. LOL The twins were born 6 weeks after my daughter, our second child. We didn't do much with that couple after that. Having four children under 2 1/2 was just too much to try to do anything. I loved the older costumes with masks and I loved homemade costumes. One year I made matching bunny costumes for my children for Halloween. Our son was small for his age and our daughter was pretty small two and often they were mistaken for twins, so they looked like two little bunnies. I made them out of terry towel material. Another year, I made a Strawberry Shortcake dress and even a wig. The things I used to do and I had fun. I adore your talent and your Halloween quilt. Great job. I hope I'm about ready to get back to my quilting history form - it's the picture that's the hangup. I don't know where I put the quilt that I need for the picture. Praise God my kids' dad is healing. He's is rehab and standing on his "good" leg for 6 minutes at a time and still no weight on his broken pelvis side.
