I have been busy writing and testing my final pattern for the Little House Sew Along.
And I am stuck!
This pattern was originally a 12" block and I need to reduce by 50%... making it a 6" block.
I'm stuck because I can't decide would more people be intimidated by the smaller strips cut to 1-1/4" wide? It would make the pattern writing and assembly of the block really easy, but potentially more of a problem with getting the block to finish at an accurate finished 6" size. (THIS... Photo above ^^) Coping strips *could* be used to make up for the inaccurate 1/4" seams...
OR do we go with larger pieces, but the need for a partial seam??? (THAT... Photo below)
Let me know your thoughts.
Keep Piecing,
Melva

I agree that many sewers are intimidated by narrow strips: however, they are also intimidated by partial seams. I like the first heart better.
ReplyDeleteboth sizes look good, maybe a mixture of both sizes?
ReplyDeleteI’d go for the partial seam. They really aren’t hard and many people don’t like small piecing.
ReplyDeleteI also like the first heart better as the one skinny strip on the partial seam heart really throws off the design, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteI've responded both on Facebook and IG and am looking forward to seeing the consensus. Both of them have things I like about them - maybe because of the fabrics? But I have to admit the first one is really cute, knowing that I'll be cursing as I make it - lol!
ReplyDeleteI'm not intimidated by 1 and 1/4" strips, or by the prospect of adding a coping strip if needed. Same with partial seams, although I'd have to remember how to do them, lol! Which block do you like best? Use that one!
ReplyDeletePartial seams are actually easy. For the sake of accuracy, I think I'd tend to go for those, rather than the narrow strips.
ReplyDeleteI like the first option with the narrow strips. You could make it a paper pieced pattern so people didn't have to worry about the block turning out. --TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteI like the 1 1/4" block better. You could offer a paper piece template to keep it more accurate. That's probably what I would do. Or oversize the outside strip on each half to 1 1/2" and then have them trim each component to the final size before adding the snowballed corners and final assembly.
ReplyDeleteI like the look with the smaller strips better too. Kate’s suggestion sounds like a possible solution.
ReplyDeleteOhh the struggles of math haha!! I bet you figured out a great solution!
