Fabulous Friday Finish(es)!

It has been a busy, busy week.  But I don't mind being so busy when things just seem to fall into place, better than planned, and significant forward movement is achieved.

The TOPS quilt for my friend is done and ready for delivery!  I was questioning the sensibility of incorporating Red/White/Blue and her favorite color purple... But I am pleased with the result.  All sashing and borders are of a Patriotic theme.  The border is a red background with a few blue stars and white script of the Pledge of Allegiance.  How much better can this be???

I used a lavender backing and a maroon-ish thread for quilting.  It blends well with the deep reds as well as the purples.  A striped blue and white binding finished it all off well.

And since I used Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 cotton/poly fusible batting the sandwiching was super fast and I just love the squishy, cuddly and well-loved look after just one washing.

Once that was done I did a pattern test for Jen, fellow quilter/blogger over at Patterns by Jen.  She had sent the pattern a few months ago.  And, while I have had it sitting on the table in my studio staring at me for weeks now, I still didn't know what color-way or fabrics I wanted to use for it.

I kept being drawn to red and black, but it is soooooo far out of my "normal" I kept pushing it aside and questioning myself... That is, until I spotted a fat quarter of fabric that my friend Susan had purchased at the gift shop of the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska and sent to me.  That red fabric with the museum's logo printed on it along with the swirly grey/black fabric I recently used on a custom t-shirt quilt were exactly what was needed!  I can't wait to show you the finished quilt.  Though, honestly, I'm not sure when it will be officially "finished" because I am planning on hand-quilting it.  It will be my travel/camping work in progress.  I cannot tell you just how badly I am itching to get back to camping!

I have been revisiting the Pieces From The Past Sew Along Series and am compiling a book (via Shutterfly) to get all all of the letters, stories, recipes and photos in one place.  It has been fun... like visiting with an old friend.

Enough of celebrating my finishes and day-dreaming of camping... I need to go sandwich my customer's cowboy quilt and spend some time on the computer.

I hope that your week has been as fabulous as mine.
Have you had any finishes to celebrate this week?

Leave a comment... I'd love to hear about what you have done.

Happy Friday!

Melva

  1. I'm working on a "squirrel" this week- a pattern called the Kindness Quilt that is perfect for a bunch of leftover fabrics from a previous quilt. I am so liking it and making it is such fun. I waited quite awhile for the perfect pattern until suddenly there it was!
It's a great idea to make up a book for the quilt; I learned so much from your stories and letters.

  6. It was so interesting, reading your Pieces from the Past posts and seeing the letters and photos. A book is the perfect idea for preserving everything for future generations. Good luck!

  7. Hi Melva! I suspect a camping trip is in your very near future. It is Memorial Day weekend in just two weeks! The t-shirt quilt turned out fabulously. I never would have thought to combine the r/w/b and purple together but it certainly works. And even better that it's what your friend wanted! The pattern test for Jen looks fab, too. I love red, black and white together and those fabrics look great together. Finally, I'm so glad you are making a permanent reminder of all the Pieces pieces together. That's something to treasure. ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. Creating a book with the letters and remembrances you shared during the Pieces of the Past quiltalong is a fabulous idea. It will be a wonderful resource in preserving your family history, I finally finished the Double Nine Patch block this week. I can't wait for the next installment of the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail quiltalong.

  12. The TOPS quilt came out great and purple is perfect with blue and red. After all, those colors are lined up together in the color wheel, red and blue with purple in between them! I hope you get to go camping again soon.

  13. Just love the colors on that quilt!
I am trying to tame my floral scraps . Have another top to sew up during a guild zoom meeting
and the pile of floral should be much smaller!
    Stay safe and sew on!
