UFO Blog Hop

Welcome to the Quilt Qwazy Queens blog hop hosted by Marian at Seams To Be Sew! The subject of this hop is UFO's - for those that may be new to quilting terminology, also known as Un-Finished Objects.

Prize details and the list of participants follow my UFO post...

UFO's are a bit alien-like to me because I dislike Un-Finished Objects (projects) It is just my personality type. So, for me, a UFO sighting in my studio is a rare thing.

I only have a few that I would consider Un-finished... and one is actually un-started, but I have fabric set aside waiting for some brilliant inspiration to hit!

#1 - is the t-shirt quilt that I have had stored in the basement dresser for a number of years. A few years ago the collection of shirts had grown to the point that the drawer was over flowing. So, to save room, I cut the blocks out of the shirts that I wanted to use. This project has moved forward this year in the manner that I all of the said blocks now have fusible interfacing on the backs of them - they have been relegated to the basement dresser once again until further notice.

#2 - Some would not even consider this a real UFO because it is nothing more than three large pieces of fabric - but I really do have specific plans for it! I just need to drag my scrap bin out and start making some wonky log cabin blocks to create furrow rows alternated with some of the farm land fabric.

#3 is the collection of 6-inch blocks from the 2017 Moda Christmas Blocks...

I am open to suggestions for these blocks!

#4 (and the final one) is the star of this post. Last year, using my Grandpa's ties (and the only two of my dad's - indicated with the arrows in the photo) I started making Dresden plates. I was unsure how many I could cut from the ties so the size of the project was/is dependent upon the availability of plates. After working through about half of the tie fabric I had six plates.

I was stumped...  I am unsure of how many plates I can complete with the ties I have available.  As well as being unsure of what layout I wanted to use. Did I want to use only plate blocks?  It seemed to me that they needed to be alternated with filler blocks... Perhaps with crocheted doilies?  But I only had five in the closet...

And then as I was rummaging around for something else I located a table cloth that had some "fancy cut work" on it.  It was quite large and in good shape with the exception of the center of the cloth where there was a hole or two.  I grabbed my 12-1/2" ruler and started fussy cutting...  I have 16 blocks!  They will look great with the dresden blocks...

I am still unsure of how many plates I can get from the remaining ties, but at least I feel as though I moved forward.  YAY!

Are UFOs a common occurrence for you?
How many do you have?
(Is it even polite to ask that???)
Probably not...

Leave a comment with a suggestion for the Christmas blocks or let me know how many UFOs you have sighted in your closet.

I love to hear from other quilters!
You can keep up with me on facebook or Instagram as well!

  1. I really like the way you are using your grandfather's and father's ties! I'll be doing this with my dad's ties one of these days!

  2. Hi, Melva, You do have UFOs after all. Welcome to the club. Now I don't feel so bad after all. Your projects are great. I'm especially liking the T-shirt one since I've never done one. I gave all my daughter's T-shirts away. Maybe I'll have to make one for myself with all of mine.

  3. I have a bunch not started but none half finished.

  4. Can't count that high So just going to try and complete 50 this year and KEEP on going! Slow and Steady!

  5. My internet must be giving me grief tonight, I can't see the first two images ... I guess one of those must be the t-shirt quilt... Anyway I really like the tie/doily quilt also. I can't imagine what else you could do with ties, but it might be kind of fun to make a strip border of them and have the pointed part slightly over the edge so it's dimensional... Just a thought :) I'm so happy you participated Melva, Thank you.

    1. LoL, I had this same problem last week, only with that one I couldn't see the submit buttons so always had to hit the reply button on the posts, thus I'd finally get to comment... but I commented today and now I can see the two images at the top of the post.... Love all those t-shirts, that's gonna be a fun finish when you get it done... but I really can't imaging a sewing room with so few UFOs in it. :p

  6. UFOs are not a common occurrence for me actually. I guess I'm kind of like you in that way. I hate the feeling that something is unfinished. I do have a few. The one thing the UFOs have in common is that they are all projects for me. I tend to set them aside when there's something I want to make for someone else.

  7. Great job working on your UFOs. It’s wonderful that you were able to come up with solution for the tie quilt. I have several UFOs of my own and I have two that I’m hoping to complete soon. Thanks for sharing.

  10. I would make several things with the Christmas blocks like some placemats with a block or two pieces in them for a modern twist, a runner and a kitchen towel.

  13. Those XMas blocks would make a great table runner, or a pillow even. I really like the Dresden tie project too. I don’t have UFOs, and I explain why in my post which goes up tomorrow!

  14. I'm a "serial topper" so too many to mention. It's embarrassing. LOL. For the blocks I'd make a sampler quilt in a puzzle layout similar to a t-shirt quilt. Unite them together with a dark red or green fill in strips

    ReplyDelete
  15. I also do not like UFO's at all! I like your dresden plate layout!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lots of projects await! Just pick one and get 'er done!

  17. Your Christmas blocks would make great pot holders for gifts this Christmas or placemats. I have a couple of UFOs and I'm starting 2 new projects soon. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com

  18. I just started learning to quilt, so my list of UFO's is small - 4! I hope to get them finished for Christmas to be gifted! Thank you, Susan

  20. I would make a quilt with the Christmas blocks. I have a family room and a living room that I like to decorate for the holidays, so I can always find a use for one more quilt. If I really didn't need it, it would make a fabulous Christmas gift.

  21. I have too many UFO's. This is inspiring me to make a list of them, and make a goal to finish at least one of them right away, then keep at it until they are all done or re-homed.

  22. I have about 10 UFO'S, and lots of other projects ready to go. I have the patterns and fabric, now to add time and energy.

  23. I usually finish all of my quilt tops but I do have two that have been put aside for sometime and are not moving I at least need to take them out of their boxes and put them on the design wall - maybe if I saw them every day I would finish?

    ReplyDelete
  24. 4-5 UFO's. Plans are to finish by the end of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Your tie quilt will be a wonderful memory quilt. Nicely done on the filler blocks. Good luck getting it done. When I started quilting I finished one project completely before starting another. Now, I have about 10 UFO's, three of those partially quilted, the rest completed quilt tops. I hope to have the partially quilted ones completed by this summer.

  26. I started working on getting all of my UFOs done up a little over a year ago. I finished a Maple Leaf quilt I had started about 40 years ago by splitting the blocks into 2 throws and 3 table runners. Done! My UFO pile has gone from about a dozen to 2. Woohoo!

  28. I have way too many UFOs, so this year the rule is to finish at least two before I can start another project. So far it seems to be working (but it's only March).

  40. I have a lot of UFO's... but many are probably projects that will never be completed but am not ready to give them away or give up on them. And sometimes, I do drag out an old project and work on it and get it finished and it feels great. But, mostly, I like new projects made with newer, more modern fabrics and the 'old' stuff remains waiting patiently.

  41. I love the tractors! I have one project right now that I am working on... I tell myself that I can't start a new project until my last one is completed.

  42. I have way too many UFO'S! That's why this Blog Hop is good for me. You can add candy cane sashing to your Christmas Blocks and get it finished quickly. I have a few UFO'S that are stacks of Blocks. Are you using both ends of the ties?

As for other UFO's, well, more than I'd like to admit, but atleast a dozen. (sigh)

Anyway, love the tie idea you have going. As for the Christmas quilt blocks, how about an Apron? You could use one for the bib and a couple for the pockets.

Thanks for showing your UFO's :)

  54. I don't really have UFO's... maybe I am kidding myself but I consider them longterm WIPs. If I come to the conclusion that I don't like a project, I give it away. Love how you used the ties, looks lovely.

  55. No UFOs and one WIP, there are bagged projects in mind and I have them queued up in order to complete. Like the comment above ^, if I lose interest, I give it away. Not much loss since 90% of my fabric is thrifted.
