Quilter's Laundry Day

Jen Rosin over at A Dream & A Stitch and Janice Holton at Color, Creating & Quilting announced a quilt along and blog hop a few weeks ago.  The pattern was for a 16" mini quilt... and it was super cute!  And the ideas in my head were rolling - so there was no stopping them!

I really wasn't sure that I would have time to participate since I was in the midst of the Hanky Quilt and needed to continue working on the wedding quilt for our daughter... I mean the wedding is just 4 weeks away!

But I was in need of "a change in scenery" of sorts and decided that one day away from the King-sized wedding quilt was much needed. The top was complete and had been sandwiched.  I felt that I "deserved" and had even "earned" the right to a break...

So I took one!

When I first saw the pattern I immediately thought of using the open sky space as an area for mountains.

Using inspiration from Amy Ellis over at Amy's Creative Side  and her Majestic Mountains paper pieced pattern that I made last fall I came up with something similar... and what I think is a fair representation of our local mountain range.

We live in Southern Colorado and every day we are fortunate enough to enjoy the beauty of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.

For the quilt drying on the line in the yard I wanted to make a play on my first published block Pieces of My Heart that was included in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, volume 8.

I took two pieces of paper 2" x 3-1/2" and drew lines on each to indicate which direction the fabric was to be sewn on and jumped into my scrap bin in search of 1 inch wide strips.

Placing 2" squares on each piece after having the strips sewn on, I marked a center line and did the sew and flip method and trimmed to create the bottom of the heart.  Using 1" squares I did the same to shape the top of the heart.

I added a border and used a fabric marker to draw in a line at the edge to look like the binding.

It was a fun break form the wedding quilt!
(I am now hand-sewing the binding)

I hope that you will stop by the other blogs and see what everyone has created.

There are prizes to be won at some of the blogs!

I am offering a chance to win the recent copy of QuiltMaker's 100 Blocks, volume 14 (including my block - To Have And To Hold, #1310).

  1. Love your version of Quilters Laundry Day Melva. I especially like the way you made it your own, not just the beautiful mountains and the lovely quilt, but the little things, the tiny border around the quilt on the washing line, the way you quoted the grass (wish I'd thought of it) and the border around the mini which, with the coloured binding, really sets the mini off well.

  10. I like the way to paid tribute to your beloved mountains on your mini. I live on a dairy farm and so a cow would be a must on mine. I am also a scrappy star addict and so the quilt on the clothesline would be a star quilt of some sort.

  13. There have been many surprises today on the blog hop, and your mountains were a great addition to that. Nice work! I think if I was to make this again, I'd probably borrow a lot of ideas from this group, but a 3 D addition for sure.

  16. I love how you added the mountains. Great job!

The houses on our street has small round or diamond shape windows at the top. I would add one on the roof and maybe add a bicycle.

  20. Instead of mountains, I would add tree covered bluffs and a hint of the mississippi River. The mountains on your block are an awesome representation of CO. I do love your heart block also as seen in the magazine. Thanks and I am now a follower.

  24. How neat to make this block your own by adding your mountains and your own heart pattern. I wonder, do you live near the Great Sand Dunes, too? We vacationed there once. Simply awesome! If I were to make this block, maybe I would sub our neighbor's old fence for the posts. I always photograph my quilts against it as I have no clothesline.

  25. I live in the midwest and you just never know what weather to expect in any season. I could have hung clothes out a couple of days ago when it was in the 70's, now it is below freezing. They say if you don't like the weather here, just stick around for a few minutes. LOL I think I'd have to somehow show how the weather changes that occur so quickly.

  26. I live in West Virginia so those mountains and some tree tops would be my special addition! And a grandmother's garden quilt to dry on the line! I follow you at Bloglovin'! Have an especially wonderful Day!

  27. Melva, so glad you decided to take a break! I LOVE your mountains! They are not at all how I pictured them, this interpretation is very modern and fascinating to look at! And the heart quilt is a perfect touch of love. Very well done! I am having a ball visiting all the blogs and seeing all the creativity. Thanks so much for joining in!

  36. I think I'd have to put a rainbow in my sky, since I see them frequently out my kitchen window. And for the quilt, I think I'd have to put our initial in the middle with maybe small corners of different quilt blocks. Love the mountains. Hope to someday see those Colorado mountains!
